About Calum

Calum Brown

Calum started his musical journey at the age of 7 when his father, Graham, introduced him to the chanter. From then on, Calum continued pipe lessons with the late Pipe Major John Stewart of Aberdeen and then former Gold Medalist, Dr Jack Taylor of Aboyne.

His passion from all of his learning translated into the solo piping circuit, where as a junior he received prizes including the coveted 'Pipe Idol' award for young players in Scotland that compete at Glasgow's piping festival, 'Piping Live'. That year, he also went on to win the Northern Meeting 14 and Under MSR, and a clean sweep in the Under 18 competition at the Scottish Piping Society of London (SPSL).

Graham also introduced Calum to the pipe band scene at the age of 10, where he first joined the 47th Culter BB Pipe Band and became a member for six years. In this time, Calum also became a member of the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland under the direction of former Field Marshal Montgomery piper, Alisdair McLaren. Calum then joined Bucksburn and District Pipe Band in 2017, before joining Inveraray and District in 2018, eventually winning the Worlds with them in 2019. Calum went on to win multiple Major events with Inveraray up until 2023. He was then appointed Pipe Sergeant of TEXO Deeside Caledonia Pipe Band in 2024, recently helping them gain promotion from Grade 3A to Grade 2 in 2025, and achieving Champions of Champions with the band too.

Calum's love for piping and traditional music gained him a place at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, where he achieved a First Class Honours degree in Traditional Music - Piping.

While studying, Calum continued in the solo circuit as a senior competitor. During this time he was taught by Willie McCallum, now a 9-time overall and 11-time MSR Glenfiddich winner, and has since seen success in competitions across the senior circuit.

What People Say

"Calum has been teaching me for more than three years now, and has driven my improvement as a piper throughout these years. His advice covering all aspects of technique, musicality and performance is invaluable, and his knowledge, proven by success in both the solo and the band scene, helps to develop well rounded pipers. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Calum's tuition to any piper."

James Fraser

Winner of the 15-18 MSR at the Northern Meeting

"I've known Calum for over 20 years, from when I used to work in the same hospital as his dad, Graham. I remember hearing him playing the pipes, probably around aged 10, and thinking that I was witnessing the start of something special. I'm glad to have been proven correct as Calum has grown to become one of the top solo bagpipers on the planet, as well as a Grade 1 World Pipe Band Champion amongst his large list of band achievements. When Calum moved home to Culter after gaining his degree at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, I was delighted to have him come on board as my Pipe Sgt. at Deeside Caledonia… and what an impact he has had. In only his second season, he was a major factor in helping the band become statistically the most successful pipe band on the planet in 2025. Calum is a great teacher with a calm and understanding demeanour, and has a phenomenal grasp of music which is his greatest passion… I swear he could get a tune out of a dustbin! Some of his students are well on their way to being top players in their own right. He's not just a great friend, but someone who I can trust and turn to for musical advice despite being nearly 20 years my junior."
